Wardley vs. Dubois Ranks Among Greatest All-British Heavyweight Title Fights

Aaron Clarke

Fabio Wardley's first defense of the WBO heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois on May 5 sits among the most significant all-British world title fights in boxing history, though it trails several landmark domestic clashes in scale and commercial reach.

Wardley, 31, was elevated from interim champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt. The Ipswich native brings a 20-0-1 record with 19 knockouts into the bout against Dubois, who holds 22 wins and 3 losses with 21 stoppages. Dubois himself was promoted to IBF champion in 2024 when Usyk relinquished that strap.

Where Wardley-Dubois Stands Among Heavyweight Rivalries

Per ESPN's Nick Parkinson, the fight could produce enough drama to contend for fight of the year, but falls short of five previous all-British heavyweight title bouts in terms of magnitude. Dubois stopped Anthony Joshua in five rounds at Wembley Stadium last September before 96,000 fans, the largest crowd for a UK boxing event on record. Joshua, who earned $83 million that year and ranked 16th on Forbes' highest-paid athletes list, hit the canvas four times in what Parkinson called "a nightmare" performance.

Tyson Fury's sixth-round stoppage of Dillian Whyte in September 2022 drew 94,000 to Wembley, marking Fury's first fight in England in four years and his first as reigning WBC champion on home soil. Lennox Lewis stopped Frank Bruno over seven rounds in Cardiff in 1993, widely recognized as the first all-British world heavyweight title fight, while David Haye dispatched Audley Harrison in three rounds at Manchester Arena in 2010 before 20,000 fans.

Wardley has delivered action-heavy performances recently against Justis Huni and Frazer Clarke, setting up a clash with Dubois that carries legitimate fight-of-the-year potential. The bout is scheduled for early May, with Wardley putting the WBO strap on the line for the first time since being elevated from interim status.
