Vitor Shaolin: Refs can cut fighter careers from 10 years to 2

Former Shooto champion Vitor Shaolin says referees who hesitate to stop fights risk turning a decade-long career into two years of brutal decline.

Shaolin, who has worked nearly 200 bouts since getting licensed by the New York State Athletic Commission in 2014, made the comments to Sherdog while defending his controversial fifth-round stoppage at UFC 328. He waved off the co-main event title fight between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira after the Japanese fighter absorbed 14 unanswered punches in the final frame.

Shaolin compares Taira stoppage to own career-altering injury

"I wasn't going to let him fall unconscious with his face on the canvas by one more punch," Shaolin told the outlet. "It's actions like this that can reduce a 10- or 15-year career to two years. A series of concussions can totally change the course of a career."

The Brazilian black belt drew on his own experience as a fighter. In a 2007 bout against Gesias Cavalcante at K-1 Heroes, Shaolin suffered a retinal detachment after taking a heavy shot. He credits the referee for stopping that fight despite his own refusal to quit. "Today I thank the referee for stopping it because my mentality was to fight to the death, just like Taira," he said.

Shaolin also revealed he helped launch Jose Aldo's international career in 2005. After winning his own Cage Rage belt in England, Shaolin arranged for the then-unknown Aldo to travel on a spare ticket from the promotion. Aldo stayed with Shaolin's agent in the UK and scored two quick knockouts at local shows, opening the door to Pancrase and eventually the WEC.

The UFC has not used a Brazilian referee regularly since Mario Yamasaki left officiating panels years ago, though Shaolin has drawn more assignments since 2024. He now splits time between teaching jiu-jitsu in New Jersey and working fights across multiple commissions.
