Tributes Pour In After Ricky Hatton's Passing – ‘A Legend In British Boxing'
The boxing community reacted to the passing of Ricky Hatton at 46, as many tributes poured in.
Reports indicate that the authorities found Hatton dead at his residence, but there is nothing to indicate that it was a suspicious death. The Brit was on course to make a return to the ring this year, as we look back at his legacy. Hatton was a dominant force in the light-welterweight division, securing his most famous victory against Kostya Tszyu to claim the IBF and The Ring titles. He later added the WBA light-welterweight belt by defeating Carlos Maussa. His legacy also includes a world title at welterweight, which he won by beating Luis Collazo. His passing comes just as he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2024.
Hatton was famously known as "The People’s Champion." He was from a Manchester council estate and remained grounded despite his fame and fortune. However, after his knockout loss to Manny Pacquiao, Hatton’s life took a dark turn. He was open about his struggles with depression, drug use, and alcoholism.
Hatton openly discussed his mental health challenges, even becoming an ambassador for the mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably. Even after he retired from fighting, he remained active in the sport as a trainer and promoter, guiding young boxers and showing that his passion for boxing never faded. Tributes have poured in for the late fighter.
"Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances," Greater Manchester Police said
