Topuria Fires Back At Gaethje's Father
Ilia Topuria has responded to comments made by Justin Gaethje's father ahead of their lightweight title unification bout at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14.
Topuria, who has predicted a first-round knockout throughout the build-up, was not prepared to let the comments pass without a response. The champion has made the Gaethje family dynamic part of the fight week narrative.
Gaethje's father has been a visible presence in the build-up, and his characterisation of the undefeated champion as a "little short guy" gave Topuria exactly the kind of material he tends to use most effectively — personal, dismissive, and easy to file away as motivation. The response from Topuria was pointed enough to suggest the comment landed, even if the public reaction was one of confidence rather than irritation.
“Fathers hope. Champions know. I’ve heard this story before: bigger men, stronger men, better men. Men who said I was just a small guy who was about to get a lesson in humility. They all learned the truth the same way. Your son already knows who I am. On June 14th, you will too. 18-0 PAPA,” Topuria said
Topuria claimed the vacant lightweight title with a stoppage of Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 last June, adding another former champion to a knockout streak that already included Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway at featherweight. Gaethje earned his shot at the undisputed title with a unanimous decision over Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 in January, claiming the interim belt and setting up the unification bout that headlines the White House card.
