Smith Mocks Eubank Jr.’s Excuses, Chisora Refuses To Retire
Liam Smith has mocked Chris Eubank Jr.’s initial complaint that there was the use of an illegal elbow that contributed to his defeat against the former junior middleweight champion.
Smith stopped Eubank Jr. in the fourth round to complete a shock victory, as the latter’s chin gave way for the first time in his career.
In the aftermath of the defeat, however, there were suggestions that Smith used an elbow illegally as he let fly with his combinations.
Nothing came to fruition in that regard, as Eubank had to accept the loss in the run-up to their rematch on September 2nd, 2023.
But looking back, Smith viewed it as a sign of Eubank offering excuses for his loss when he was simply outfought.
Smith On Eubank Jr.
"That (elbow) accusation made Chris look laughable rather than anybody else. He’s come with the elbow, he blamed the referee. Because he activated the rematch clause he’s got to come up with some excuse and he really is that stupid he’s blaming all different excuses.
"It was the referee at one minute, it was the elbow the other minute, it was the weight one minute, it was (trainer) Roy Jones’ fault the next. He’s blaming everybody bar himself," Smith said
The pressure, therefore, is on Eubank to produce the goods. A defeat for Eubank will likely increase the calls on him to retire from the sport, as the chances of a world title shot are unlikely.
So come fight night, Eubank will be looking to leave it all on the line. And after hiring his new trainer, Brian Mcintyre, Eubank will have no excuses this time around.
And yet, Smith foresaw another victory for him as he has targeted mega fights in the future.
Smith On His Future Fights
"He can bring the best coaches in the world. I just think he’s that egotistic, you can’t really change him. Any of those fights excite me. Any of those fights are big-money fights for me.
"There’s still a chance (of going down to 154). It depends what comes available. If (Jermell) Charlo vacates the four belts then I can maneuver myself in a position after Chris and fight for one of them titles then yeah, I’ll do light-middle again. I beat Chris again and I should get a healthy ranking at middleweight also, so we’ll see," Smith
Chisora Refuses To Retire
Meanwhile, Derek Chisora has hit back at suggestions that he should retire from the sport. Chisora is coming off the back end of a unanimous-decision win over Gerald Washington.
Both fighters had a back-and-forth fight, which resulted in Chisora hitting the canvas in the second round.
Although that may be the case, the referee did not see it as a knockdown. Thereafter, a clash of heads occurred as Chisroa’s right eye had blood pouring above it.
And given that Chisora is 39-years-old, there were suggestions that he should call it a day.
The fighter’s record stands at 34 wins with 13 losses in 47 bouts, having faced the big names including Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk and Vitali Klitschko.
And yet, Chisora still had one more goal before calling it a day.
"That’s what we do. I will go to war for my kids. I will die for my daughters. I will die for my mother. I don’t know if I will die for my wife because if I die for her, she might marry some other guy.
"You will give your daughter your kidney or your lungs. That’s what we’re talking about. It’s not quite sad. It’s what I know. If I knew how to be a gardener, I would be a gardener from day one, but I’m a fighter. This is what we know. Source: Dereck Chisora: "I Am
"You can’t decide to tell a fighter, ‘You’ve got to stop fighting now because you’re going to be a gardener.’ No, we don’t know that s**t. From day one, we’re fighting in the amateur games and then the pro. This is what we know. I Am Not Stopping, F**k Off"
"I’ll be honest with you. I’ve got three more fights, and then I’m out. I want to get to 50. Is that alright? I’ll do the f**k I want because you know why? I’m war," Chisora
In reality, both Chris Eubank Jr. and Chisora are entering towards the latter ends of their career.
And if further defeats were to follow, then the calls on them to retire will only increase. Both fighters are not likely to win a world title, and with plenty of mega paydays between them, there has to come a point when they consider hanging up the gloves.
So the only thing they can ensure is that they go out in style. But in doing so, they do risk harming themselves in a sport which can have long-lasting effects. And there is not getting away from that.
