Shields Claims Cyborg Quit During Sparring
Claressa Shields has a story about Cris Cyborg in a sparring session, and she is not keeping it to herself.
The ongoing feud between the two combat sports legends turned sharper this week when Shields responded to Cyborg's reported $2 million fight offer with a detailed account of what she says happened the last time they shared a gym together.
"What a bum, talking about she's offering me $2 million for a fight. Cris Cyborg can't box. I beat the s— out of her, and I wasn't even trying. Didn't have a mouthpiece or anything, had some Nike shoes. I was trying to show her some boxing stuff but she wanted to get in the ring and spar. She quit in four rounds. She was like a deer in the headlights in the fourth round. D— near begging me not to knock her out, not to stop her. I can fight you with one hand and beat the dog s— out of you. Stop playing,” Shields
Cyborg was not inclined to let it go unanswered.
"1,000 ways to say no to a fight and only 1 way to say yes. Weird flex considering it was you who called me out to a boxing fight. August you're fighting at 160, I'm fighting at 145. End of the year we can meet at 154 pounds,” Cyborg
Cyborg at 145 and Shields at 160 makes 154 a natural midpoint, and Cyborg framing it as a concrete offer — with a weight and a timeframe — keeps the fight alive as a realistic possibility while also deflecting from the sparring claims by staying practical.
Their history makes it personal in a way that most crossover fights are not. Former training partners turning on each other, each claiming superiority in the other's sport, with a shared gym session as the disputed evidence. The promotional story writes itself. Whether a fight actually gets made will depend on promoters, broadcasters, and contracts.
