Robert Griffin III demands UFC 329 refunds after McGregor injury
Robert Griffin III wants UFC to refund every fan who bought a ticket to UFC 329 after Conor McGregor blew out his knee 69 seconds into his comeback fight against Max Holloway.
The former NFL quarterback, who now works at FOX Sports after his departure from ESPN, posted his demand following the Las Vegas debacle last weekend, according to MMA Mania. McGregor fell forward after botching a series of jumping kicks, collapsing to the canvas with what appeared to be a catastrophic knee injury before the opening round was even complete.
Chael Sonnen says McGregor cannot headline again
Griffin also believes McGregor should hang up the gloves for good. He is not alone in that assessment. Retired UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen told MMA Junkie that the Irishman looked finished well before the injury. "Conor threw a punch and he went down. He fell forward like a drunk guy," Sonnen said, per the outlet. "He hadn't thrown punches at full speed in so long, he lost his own balance doing it. You cannot main event him. You cannot repackage and sell this story."
Sonnen added that UFC president Dana White has a history of cutting ties with aging stars, even those close to him personally. He cited Chuck Liddell, Brock Lesnar, and Anderson Silva as examples of fighters White refused to keep booking despite their requests. "If Dana takes a look at Conor, thinks he could get hurt, or you don't belong here and you're taking someone else's spot — no," Sonnen said.
UFC no longer sells pay-per-view events for individual purchase, meaning only ticket holders at T-Mobile Arena would be eligible for any hypothetical refund. The promotion took in a reported 25 million dollars from gate sales alone. McGregor has not addressed retirement publicly since the injury.
