Muratalla Defends IBF Title Against Conceicao Saturday
Raymond Muratalla defends his IBF lightweight title against former featherweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super featherweight champion Robson Conceicao on Saturday night in Las Vegas, with the 29-year-old titleholder entering as a heavy favourite against a 37-year-old Brazilian whose best days may be behind him.
Muratalla won the belt in January with an upset of Andy Cruz, a performance that showcased his composure against one of the sport's most decorated amateurs. Conceicao, an Olympic gold medalist from Rio 2016, has spent the last few years competing at world title level but has fought only twice in 15 months, both easy assignments in Brazil after moving up from 130 pounds.
How Muratalla's Style Matches Up With Conceicao
Bad Left Hook's Patrick Stumberg noted Conceicao's unusual blend of Olympic fundamentals and awkward offensive form. "There's such a charming disconnect between his software and his hardware that I can't help but root for him," Stumberg wrote, before adding that novelty alone cannot carry the day against Muratalla's advantages in speed, power, youth, and reach.
The pick from Bad Left Hook is unanimous decision for Muratalla, with both analysts expecting the champion to control the second half after Conceicao possibly nicks a few early rounds. Stumberg suggested the Brazilian has no clear path to victory against an opponent too sharp to out-box at distance and too physically superior in close.
Conceicao has proven tricky before, taking Emanuel Navarrete to a controversial draw in 2023 and beating O'Shaquie Foster for a world title in 2024, but the long layoff at this level and the age gap loom large. Muratalla is expected to use the same measured pressure that carried him past Cruz, coaxing out Conceicao's flurries and countering whenever the Brazilian overcommits.
The bout airs Saturday night on DAZN and TNT as the first half of a world title doubleheader.
