McGregor Starts Online Petition For His Presidential Run

Conor McGregor has launched an online petition in an attempt to get on the ballot to run for President of Ireland.

McGregor’s bid for the presidency follows his controversial statements during a visit to the White House, where he met with President Donald Trump. During this visit, McGregor criticized Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, particularly over the country’s handling of illegal immigration. Martin did not take kindly to McGregor’s remarks, stating that they did not reflect the views of the Irish people.

McGregor’s petition aims to counter the current rules where candidates must receive nominations according to a set of criteria before they can appear on the ballot. However, McGregor faces significant challenges, particularly due to his tarnished public image. Conor was found liable in a civil sexual lawsuit filed by Nikita Hand, who accused him of sexual assault in a 2018 Dublin hotel room.

Although McGregor maintained his innocence, he was ordered to pay her legal fees and damages. He also lost his appeal, with the Irishman’s popularity being low. Several brands have already distanced themselves from McGregor, with Proper No 12 Irish Whiskey ceasing to use him in its marketing and the Hitman video game franchise ending its partnership with him. However, McGregor still has plans on entering into politics.

McGregor Reacts

"I, Conor McGregor hereby declare my intention to seek the esteemed office of President of Ireland,” McGregor wrote for his Change.org campaign. “The current constitutional framework however presents a significant barrier to democratic participation. The existing regulations mandate that a candidate must secure nominations from either twenty members of the Oireachtas or four county councils to be eligible for the ballot. This system, while intended to ensure a degree of political influence among candidates, inadvertently restricts the direct voice of the Irish electorate.

"In light of this, I propose a petition advocating for a modification of the nomination process to allow my name be included on the ballot. I contend that the citizens of Ireland, both at home and abroad, should have the unhindered right to determine the candidates who appear on the presidential ballot. Therefore, I implore you to join me in this endeavor by signing this petition. Your support will be instrumental in championing a more inclusive and democratic electoral process, thereby empowering the people of Ireland to shape their own future," McGregor said
