Conor McGregor blames yacht parties, broken toe for Khabib loss

Conor McGregor has a fresh round of excuses for his 2018 submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In a new Complex interview, McGregor dismissed Nurmagomedov's undefeated record and blamed his UFC 229 defeat on everything from yacht parties to a broken toe. "I was off the yacht. I was doing bad things on the yacht. I was partying heavily, and I was up to my eyeballs in court cases," McGregor said, per MMA Mania. "I hadn't fought in two years. I was worth $200 million and I come back and fight this f*cking guy."

McGregor went further, claiming Nurmagomedov fought nobody of consequence and padded his record on regional shows. "Thirteen fights he's had in the company, that's it and three against named opponents," he said. The former two-division champion also referenced the broken foot he sustained three weeks before the bout, which appeared in a Netflix documentary.

Nurmagomedov retired in late 2020 with a spotless 29-0 mark. McGregor's own early opponents on the Irish regional circuit had losing records, and one submitted him by kneebar in just 69 seconds. Jon Jones beat Daniel Cormier after a weekend on cocaine, and Alex Pereira knocked out Jamahal Hill with a broken toe — neither blamed the circumstances.

McGregor faces Max Holloway in a featherweight rematch at UFC 329 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
