Matchroom Sport Sells Minority Stake to Bruin Capital

Lightweight & Featherweight Writer ·

Bruin Capital has acquired a minority equity stake in Matchroom Holdings, the parent company of Matchroom Boxing, in a strategic partnership designed to accelerate the promotional giant's U.S. expansion. The Hearn family keeps majority control, with Eddie Hearn remaining Group Chairman and Barry Hearn staying on as Founder and President. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal pairs one of boxing's largest independent promoters with a private equity firm specializing in scaling sports platforms. Matchroom operates across boxing, darts, snooker, and multi-sport events, staging more than 600 event days annually and representing fighters including Anthony Joshua, Katie Taylor, Jaron Ennis, and Jesse Rodriguez. Bruin, led by founder and CEO George Pyne, has built a portfolio of nine sports and media companies with offices in 21 countries.

What the Partnership Means for Matchroom's U.S. Push

Bruin will join Matchroom's board and help expand the company's digital distribution, data analytics, and direct-to-consumer platforms as it deepens its footprint in the United States. "Barry, Eddie, and the Matchroom team have built one of the most important independent sports businesses in the world," Pyne said in a statement published by Matchroom. "Matchroom sits at the intersection of live events, global media rights, and premium sports intellectual property, and we see significant opportunities ahead, particularly in the United States."

Barry Hearn emphasized the family's commitment to operational independence despite the outside investment. "We have built this business over more than forty years by staying independent and focused on execution," he said. "In Bruin, we found a partner that understands how to grow sports businesses at scale and can help us take the next step without changing how we operate."

Eddie Hearn pointed to continued growth prospects in the U.S. market and beyond. "The opportunity for Matchroom in the United States and globally continues to grow," he said. "This partnership with Bruin gives us the ability to accelerate that expansion and build on the platform we have created."

Matchroom's catalog now includes the Professional Darts Corporation, World Snooker Tour, Matchroom Multi-Sport, and Matchroom Media, producing roughly 2,400 hours of programming distributed across broadcast and streaming partners worldwide. Bruin's portfolio includes Box to Box Films, TGI Sport, and Full Swing, among other sports and entertainment properties.
