Manuel Torres faces crossroads after UFC Baku knockout loss
Manuel Torres left UFC Baku with a harsh reminder that the lightweight division offers no easy paths to the top.
The 31-year-old Mexican fighter was stopped in the second round by Rafael Fiziev on June 27 at National Gymnastics Arena, taking the first main-event loss of his UFC run. Torres had entered the bout riding a 5-1 promotional record and looking to crack the Top 10, but Fiziev landed a spinning wheel kick early in round two that sent him to the canvas. Follow-up ground strikes forced the stoppage, per MMA Mania.
Torres-Dariush rematch makes sense after knockout setbacks
The defeat marks Torres' second loss inside the Octagon and fourth overall, but the damage to his standing might be limited given Fiziev's pedigree. Fiziev has gone the distance twice with current champion Justin Gaethje, and Torres showed enough in a competitive first round to suggest he belongs in deeper waters. Sixteen of his 17 career wins have come by finish — nine knockouts, seven submissions.
A logical next step could be Beneil Dariush, who was originally scheduled to face Torres at UFC 327 before Torres withdrew with an injury. Dariush instead fought Quillan Salkilld and absorbed a technical knockout loss, leaving both fighters in need of a bounce-back opportunity. Dariush brings veteran experience and would test whether Torres can regroup after his first stoppage defeat under the UFC banner.
Torres remains young enough to mount another run at the Top 10, but the path forward now requires careful matchmaking and a return to his finishing form.
