Makhachev On Gaethje's Future After Title Win

Islam Makhachev believes Justin Gaethje has earned the right to coast after his lightweight title victory at UFC Freedom 250.

Gaethje forced Ilia Topuria to quit on the stool earlier this month to claim undisputed gold, capping a decade-long climb through one of the UFC's deepest divisions. The finish sparked immediate debate over what comes next for a fighter who has absorbed tremendous damage across 30 professional bouts.

What Makhachev Told MMA Junkie About Gaethje's Options

Speaking to MMA Junkie, the welterweight champion said he's unsure what challenge remains for the newly crowned king. "I don't know. I think this guy make like enough in this sport," Makhachev said. "He became UFC champion. He also has many records. What's next for him? If I'm matchmaker, I don't know honestly."

Makhachev added that Gaethje looked noticeably relaxed when they crossed paths recently. "This guy is not in good shape right now. I saw him last week. I said, 'Hey, why you become fat?' He's just enjoying the belt. He deserves it."

The Dagestani praised Gaethje's warrior mentality heading into the Topuria bout. "I said before that fight, Justin is a warrior. He's going to fight. You have to knock him out to stop him," Makhachev said, per MMA Junkie. "This guy is going to fight all rounds. Maybe Topuria a little bit underestimated him."

Gaethje has already ruled out an immediate rematch with Topuria, telling reporters that Arman Tsarukyan is more deserving of the next shot. Whether the 37-year-old defends multiple times or hangs up the gloves after one reign remains an open question.
