Murtazali Magomedov taps Melsik Baghdasaryan with rare Scottish twister at UFC Vegas 119
Murtazali Magomedov submitted Melsik Baghdasaryan with a Scottish twister at UFC Vegas 119, becoming the first fighter to complete the rare finish inside the octagon.
Magomedov dropped his opponent in the opening round Saturday night at the Apex in Las Vegas, secured a takedown, and then latched onto Baghdasaryan's arm and head while leaning back to lock in the submission. Baghdasaryan tapped at 1:17, per MMA Fighting.
Magomedov credits teammate for UFC debut finish
The unbeaten featherweight said after the fight that a teammate showed him the technique in camp. "This is exactly what I hoped for and it happened the way I wanted," he told the broadcast. "This guy is a very good opponent for me."
The Scottish twister variation was popularized by former UFC lightweight Stevie Ray, who used it twice in the PFL, including a win over ex-champion Anthony Pettis. Magomedov now owns the distinction of pulling it off under the UFC banner.
The finish improves Magomedov to 11-0 overall. He called out the featherweight division in his post-fight interview, saying the weight class is "almost dying" and adding, "Let's bring it back and make it great again."
