Jones Reaches Out To Poirier After Arrest
Jon Jones reached out to Dustin Poirier this week — and the message carried the weight of someone who knows what the other side of the spotlight looks like.
Jones posted publicly to offer support following Poirier's arrest for public intoxication at Atlanta International Airport last Sunday, where bodycam footage showed the retired lightweight threatening airline staff and officers after being removed from a flight.
"Wanted to write and tell Dustin Poirier to keep your head up, life happens. This too shall pass. Just keep yourself busy my man, it helps," Jones
The advice to stay busy is not generic coming from Jones. His own career has been interrupted repeatedly by incidents outside the sport. Jones also addressed Poirier's willingness to be honest about his mental state in the aftermath of the arrest.
"I do respect the fact that he's being honest about his mental state. I swear, in some weird way retiring from the UFC almost feels like retiring from the military or something. There's so many similarities," Jones
Jones's public support is notable given that he is currently fighting his own battles. He has been seeking his release from the UFC following his exclusion from the White House card, a dispute with Dana White that has left his career in a holding pattern without resolution. He is not in a position most would associate with offering advice.
