Jon Jones: Ilia Topuria can bounce back with self-honesty

Jon Jones believes Ilia Topuria has the right mindset to recover from his first professional defeat.

Topuria dropped his undefeated record last month when Justin Gaethje stopped him after four rounds in their title unification bout at UFC Freedom 250. The former two-division champion entered the cage as a heavy favorite but absorbed sustained punishment before his corner waved off the fight. Gaethje claimed gold in his third attempt, while Topuria's 17-0 start came to an abrupt end.

Jones praises Topuria's honest self-assessment after loss

Jones, whose only career blemish is a disqualification loss, told Red Corner MMA that he's heard Topuria has been humble in defeat and willing to acknowledge his mistakes. "What I heard was that he's humble. That he's honest. That he realized that he just didn't perform well," Jones said, per Sherdog. "I think that's the number one step of getting back into the ring in a healthy way. It's the guys who make excuses, that's when it's hard to come back and win that rematch."

The heavyweight champion pointed to Topuria's faith, team structure, and work ethic as foundations for a successful return. Jones emphasized that self-honesty separates fighters who bounce back from those who spiral after their first loss. "Honesty with yourself is the key to MMA," he added.

Topuria's pre-fight confidence may compound the sting of the defeat. He predicted a first-round knockout, updated his record on social media ahead of the bout, and celebrated the day before the fight. Whether those rituals return in his next camp remains to be seen. Gaethje defends his newly won belt later this year.
