Joe Cordina charged with assault, forced out of Mason fight
Former IBF featherweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super featherweight champion Joe Cordina has been charged with assault and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place, according to reports from Wales Online and the BBC.
The charges stem from an alleged incident outside a Cardiff petrol station in February. Cordina has a court appearance scheduled for early July, which explains why he withdrew from a planned lightweight title challenge against Abdullah Mason set for later this month. Albert Bell replaced the Welshman on short notice.
Cordina's career trajectory since losing IBF belt
Cordina (19-1, 9 KO) captured the IBF featherweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super featherweight strap by stopping Kenichi Ogawa in 2022 and defended it twice before dropping the belt to Anthony Cacace in Riyadh. The 32-year-old former Olympian last fought in December, beating Gabe Flores Jr, and the Mason bout would have marked his first appearance of 2026.
Bad Left Hook notes that alleged footage of the February incident has circulated online. The Mason-Bell lightweight title fight proceeds as scheduled for Saturday, June 28.
