Jermall Charlo Added to Spence vs Tszyu Undercard
Jermall Charlo is returning to the ring on July 25, added to the undercard of the Errol Spence Jr. versus Tim Tszyu card in Australia with no opponent yet announced.
It will be only the fourth time the unbeaten 36-year-old has fought since 2020 — a frequency of activity that has become one of the more persistent talking points surrounding a fighter whose record and titles suggest a much higher profile than his ring appearances have delivered.
Charlo's most recent outing came in May 2025, when he stopped Thomas Lamanna in six rounds at middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super middleweight. The win was expected and did little to answer the questions that have built up around him during an extended period of inactivity. He has now fought twice at 168 pounds, and his stated ambition of claiming a belt in a third weight class gives those appearances a strategic purpose.
He held titles at both welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight and middleweight, remains unbeaten at 34-0, and carries the physical tools to compete at the highest level across multiple divisions. The problem has never been ability — it has been availability. Three fights in five years is not a schedule that builds momentum, develops rankings positions, or keeps a fighter sharp against elite opposition.
The July 25 appearance in Australia, even without a named opponent, at least puts him on a card with genuine commercial weight. Spence versus Tszyu at super welterweight is one of the more anticipated comeback fights of the year, and the platform gives Charlo a chance to make a statement. And given he is working with Ronnie Shields, Charlo may get back to his best.
“I just started working back with Jermall Charlo. We started from the very beginning and won championships together. We are trying to revisit that. You never lose what you had. You just got to get it back. The thing about boxing is the training is the most important thing. Once you get back in that groove, nothing should change,” Shields said
