Islam Makhachev needs triple-champ status for GOAT case, says GSP
Georges St. Pierre believes Islam Makhachev should pursue a third belt if he wants to become the undisputed greatest fighter in UFC history.
The former welterweight and middleweight champion told MMA Junkie that Makhachev — who faces Ian Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia — could eventually move up to 185 pounds and attempt what no UFC fighter has accomplished: holding titles across three weight classes. "Maybe he will eventually go up to middleweight, try to do the three-weight-class club," St. Pierre said, per the outlet.
Makhachev chasing Anderson Silva's win streak record at UFC 330
The Dagestani champion enters his July bout with Garry tied with Anderson Silva for the longest win streak in UFC history at 16 straight. A victory at the Xfinity Mobile Arena would make him the sole record holder. St. Pierre expects the fight to follow a familiar script. "Ian Garry is definitely a tough opponent, a very good striker," he told MMA Junkie. "But Islam, once again, his goal is going to be to bring the fight to the ground."
St. Pierre gave Makhachev the edge in overall skills, citing his grappling as the difference-maker against the Irish striker. No fighter has ever captured UFC belts at lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight. Alex Pereira recently attempted the three-division feat and fell short, according to Sherdog.
Makhachev defends his welterweight strap at UFC 330 on July 5.
