Irish Politician Supports A Conor McGregor Boycott

Ruth Coppinger, an Irish politician, has support the idea of a public ‘boycott’ against Conor McGregor’s products.

The statement was in response to McGregor’s sexual assault civil lawsuit, where he was required to pay Nikita Hand approximately $258,440. Lamhain claimed the UFC fighter sexually assaulted her in 2018 in a Dublin hotel room. James Lawrence, McGregor’s friend, was included in the legal case. Lawrence was found not guilty, leaving McGregor as the only one liable. He has indicated his wish to appeal. But since then, he has faced several consequences. The Hitman video game franchise cut its ties with McGregor.

The Proper No. 12 Irish Whiskey brand also did the same. McGregor played a part in launching the brand before he sold his stake. Even after the sale, McGregor was used as the face of the brand in its marketing. Airports in Dublin and Cork also reacted by pulling McGregor’s drinks. That sentiment has now translated to Irish politicians.

Boycott Call

"Obviously I feel people already are boycotting his products and there has been a massive commercial backlash for Conor McGregor. People shouldn’t support Conor McGregor, his products nor his premises. I am surprised though that retailers have pulled his products because normally something like this doesn’t affect a person. So the backlash Conor McGregor is getting is significant – retailers and sponsors are reacting and long may it continue," Coppinger said

This has cast doubt on McGregor’s UFC fighting career. The Irishman has not been in the Octagon since his UFC 264 defeat against Dustin Poirier in 2021. That was his third defeat out of his last four fights, as he suffered a broken leg. He was scheduled to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29. But he pulled out after suffering a broken toe. McGregor still has two fights left on his UFC deal. He announced he will be facing Dan Hooker on February 1 in Saudi Arabia.

McGregor’s Future

However, there has been no official announcement from the UFC, which makes that unlikely. Dana White had recently said that McGregor would fight later next year, but with this legal fallout happening, there are question marks over whether fans will still see the Irishman fight. He did not need to fight due to his financial security, but the recent financial consequences could change that. McGregor is also a part owner of BKFC, meaning that he has other priorities. That leaves him in a precarious position, as Daniel Cormier questioned how McGregor could bounce back from this.

"Hitman, the video game—they took him out. Conor McGregor is going to face some real-life consequences, but my question to you guys is, does he need a fight to try to make y’all forgive him? Or will the fight world even accept this man as they used to, with this being public knowledge? He’s in [a mess] guys, now. He’s overcome many things inside the octagon and in life, but for once, I feel like this thing… I don’t know if there’s going to be any getting around this," Cormier stated
