How Will Gable Steveson's UFC Debut Go?
Gable Steveson makes his UFC debut on Saturday at UFC 329 against Elisha Ellison in a heavyweight bout that most expect the former Olympian to win comfortably.
Trainer Greg Jackson, speaking on the UFC 329 Embedded series, used the occasion to make a larger point about what he believes Steveson could become.
"I've worked with most of the greatest fighters to ever do this game, and his athletic ability is unprecedented. The way he thinks about things, how smart he is, how coachable — you need to tune in now to see where the ceiling for this guy is. He might be redefining what this sport is,” Jackson
Steveson's credentials as a wrestler are not in dispute. He won Olympic gold at heavyweight in Tokyo in 2021, an achievement Jackson contextualised bluntly: "That is so hard to do, I can't even tell you."
The path from elite amateur wrestling to UFC heavyweight contention is one the sport knows well — Daniel Cormier, Cain Velasquez, and Brock Lesnar all walked versions of it — but Steveson arrives with a more decorated amateur pedigree than any of them and the advantage of a training environment that includes Jones, who has been vocal about his belief in Steveson's potential.
The heavyweight division, currently operating without a dominant figure in the way Jones dominated at 205, has room for someone to enter and move through the rankings quickly if the talent is real.
"I think if you're a fan, you're gonna need to tune in to see what this guy can do. Where is the ceiling? What can he accomplish? What can he do?,” Jackson
Those are questions, not answers, and that is appropriate for a fighter making his promotional debut. By the end of Saturday night in Las Vegas, the sport will have its first data point on Gable Steveson at UFC level.
