Hearn Turns On Haney – ‘Lots Of Demons, Not The Same'
Eddie Hearn has turned on Devin Haney, slamming his last performance.
Haney returned to boxing with a win over Jose Ramirez in a unanimous decision in his first fight at 147. It was a return to winning ways after his no-contest against Ryan Garcia. Haney lost that fight after getting dropped three times in a majority decision loss, only for Ryan’s failed VADA tests for Ostarine to overturn the result. Haney promised a better version of himself against Ramirez. He did not have to deal with any weight issues since he looked much bigger at 147.
Devin also had over a year to deal with the demons from the Garcia fight. Haney also made changes to his camp by working with Shane Mosley. The move was made with a view to making Haney a more explosive puncher. Haney’s last stoppage was back in 2019 when he beat Zaur Abdullaev. Mosley felt Haney would stop Ramirez in the second half of the fight.
Hearn On Haney
Devin never looked like doing so, as the CompuBox numbers had it the fifth-ranked lowest fight for punches thrown. The two landed just 110 punches, with Haney connecting with 70, while Ramirez scored just 40. Mosley blamed Bill Haney for choosing that game plan, while Tim Bradley felt Devin was suffering from PTSD. Trainer Joel Diaz told Haney to retire if this was his style going forward, as Hearn also did not hold back.
"Devin had a lot of demons, but he didn’t do a very good attempt at masking them. I was getting messages from the first round, saying, ‘Devin looks petrified,. He went through a lot in that Ryan Garcia fight, but he was just moving. Devin moved like a hare. It was frantic. Actually, when he held his feet in the few times that he did, he hurt Ramirez repeatedly.
"I felt like with his size, if he had held his feet, he’s have 100% stopped Ramirez in there. I don’t know if he’s not the same fighter or he needed those rounds to get over that barrier. The thing about Ryan and Devin is, they’re not killers. You got to have the mentality, but it was disappointing on that grand stage," Hearn said
