Gane Stops Pereira To Claim Interim Heavyweight Title
Ciryl Gane ended Alex Pereira's quest for a historic third UFC title in the second round of their interim heavyweight co-main event at UFC Freedom 250.
Pereira went to his head kicks early, one partially connecting, while Gane settled into his rhythm with the jab and inside low kick combination that has always been the foundation of his game.
The second round arrived and Gane decided it immediately. A big combination landed flush, Pereira went down, and Gane followed without hesitation. Pereira rose but the Frenchman never let him settle, landing shot after shot as Pereira tried to reset. The referee watched for a moment and then pulled Gane away. It was over.
Pereira arrived at UFC Freedom 250 as one of the most decorated fighters in UFC history. He vacated his light heavyweight title to chase the heavyweight belt and history. He will leave Washington without either, his record moving to 13-4 following a stoppage defeat that few saw coming in this form or on this timeline.
Gane walks away with the interim heavyweight belt and the most significant victory of his career. The no-contest with Tom Aspinall last October left his standing in the division unresolved. Saturday on the White House lawn resolved it emphatically. He is now the mandatory challenger for Aspinall's undisputed title, assuming the British champion's recovery from eye surgery and his ongoing contract dispute with the UFC can be navigated.
For Pereira, the defeat raises questions about the ceiling at heavyweight that his performances at light heavyweight never had to answer. He was technically outclassed on Saturday — Gane's combination work was sharper, his timing was precise, and the finish was not a lucky punch but the product of a coherent gameplan executed under the biggest lights the sport had seen in years.
