FBI arrests five for planned White House UFC event attack
Federal agents arrested five people for allegedly planning attacks on the UFC event held at the White House earlier this month, disrupting plots that reportedly involved explosive drones.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced Tuesday that multiple suspects were in custody following a multi-state operation. The bureau learned of the possible threat on June 10, four days before the mixed martial arts card on the South Lawn, Patel said in a post on X.
Multi-state arrests halt drone attack plans
The five arrested came from Ohio, Missouri and California, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press. ABC News reported that the plot included explosive drones meant to target buildings near the event venue. "Thanks to the rapid action of the FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold," Patel wrote.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran said agents "worked around the clock to identify those responsible and hold them accountable." The three-day event drew tens of thousands to the Lincoln Memorial and Ellipse for a news conference and fan festival before Sunday's fights, where President Trump celebrated his 80th birthday.
ESPN reported 14 total arrests across the weekend for crimes including disorderly conduct and drug possession, separate from the FBI's terror plot investigation. Charges against the five suspects are expected to be unsealed Tuesday.
