Eubank Sr. Won't Attend Eubank Vs. Benn – ‘I Will Not Be An Accomplice'
Chris Eubank Sr. has said he will not attend the Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn fight.
Their fight takes place on April 26, and the build-up has been marred by controversy. The fight has been in the offing since 2022 when it was first agreed upon. Eubank Jr. was on course to make a career low-weight of 157 pounds, when he usually boxes 160 pounds or above. That did not sit well with Eubank Sr., who criticized the decision to make that fight, given that weight classes exist for a reason.
Benn was also moving up from 147 pounds. Previous fights, such as Kell Brook vs. GGG, have shown that there are dangers in the sport. Brook ultimately suffered a broken eye socket when he jumped up two weight classes to face GGG. The Eubank-Benn fight never happened after Conor failed VADA tests for Clomiphene. The fight has now been agreed upon, as Eubank was hopeful that his father would attend.
Eubank Vs. Benn
Eubank Sr. has seen his other son, Sebastian, pass away, which could be a reason as to why he is so outspoken against this fight, where he feels his son is at risk. However, Eubank Jr. took the fight based on the huge rivalry that has existed between their fathers due to the family name. He has also been very outspoken against Benn’s failed tests, as he egged him during their kickoff presser.
The egg was in response to the WBC’s claim that the failed tests could have been due to an over-consumption of eggs. Since Benn had said he was cleared by the WBC, Eubank made a statement saying he was not going to accept that claim. Eubank Sr. is also on record saying he does not feel the fight will go ahead, fuelling claims that there could be safety worries. Eubank Jr. also has to abide by a 10-pound rehydration clause, something which is an additional hurdle.
Eubank Sr. Reacts
"The answer is the fight won’t happen. I am so confident about this fact — it will not happen. If this goes ahead the rules are trashed and our nation are effectively a bunch of morons. Come back at me and tell me I’m wrong, or tell me to get off my high horse and actually get on board. Who’s going to tell me to get on board in their right minds?
"And look at what Matchroom stands for now. It’s a mockery…I will not be an accomplice to their stupidity, to their circus. What’s happening is against the rules. 147 against 160 is against the rules. When Kell Brook was made to fight GGG, it’s against the rules. That boy had his eye socket smashed. This is what happens. The promoters, to them it’s just a game but to the warriors it’s a way of life. And we have to call them what they are, and they are trash," Eubank Sr. said
