Errol Spence calls Jermell Charlo 'jealous,' teases future fight
Errol Spence Jr. has turned his attention to former stablemate Jermell Charlo, calling the ex-undisputed junior middleweight champion jealous and floating a potential matchup between the two Texans.
Spence, who faces Tim Tszyu on July 25 in Australia, addressed recent back-and-forth with Charlo during a Saturday press conference in Las Vegas. The Ring Magazine reports that Spence rejected the idea of any serious rift with his one-time Dallas training partner under Derrick James, instead framing Charlo's public jabs as envy.
"We didn't really have a falling out," Spence told reporters. "I mean, dude has been jealous of me. I guess he looked at me as like PBC's golden boy." He added that the pair "might handle that in the future."
Spence questions Charlo's box office appeal
The former three-belt welterweight champion went further, challenging Charlo's marketability and suggesting promoters have soured on booking him. "The proof is the pudding — it's a reason why he hasn't had a fight yet," Spence said, per The Ring. "People are tired of giving him fights, and then you get in the red because he's fighting and he ain't got any fans."
Charlo has been out of action since his one-sided loss to Canelo Alvarez in September 2023, while Spence has not fought since Terence Crawford stopped him in nine rounds two months earlier. Crawford posted support for Spence's comeback on social media over the weekend.
Spence and Tszyu will meet at a 158-pound catchweight at a venue still to be announced in Australia.
