Dustin Poirier names one fighter who could lure him back
Dustin Poirier says he would walk away from retirement for exactly one fight.
The former interim UFC lightweight champion told fans he still wants a crack at Nate Diaz, per Sherdog. "I still want to whip Nate's ass," Poirier said. "I'll come back to fight him."
Why the Diaz fight never materialised
Poirier and Diaz were linked for years but never shared the Octagon. Diaz left the UFC in 2022 after his contract expired, pursuing boxing matches and eventually competing under his own promotion. Poirier, meanwhile, retired following his submission loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 last June.
The Louisiana native went 23-9 in his UFC run, with wins over Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and Conor McGregor twice. Diaz holds a 21-13 record overall and last fought in the UFC at welterweight in September 2022, submitting Tony Ferguson before walking away from the promotion.
No timeline exists for a potential Poirier return, and Diaz remains under contract with his own boxing outfit. Whether the UFC makes an offer to reunite the pair is unclear.
