Undefeated super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco returns to the ring this weekend in a tough test against fellow American Trevor McCumby. 

Pacheco (23-0, 18 KO’s), a towering and technically gifted 6ft4 168-pounder, has passed every test so far in his career. But questions have started to mount about how he handles pressure on the inside, which we saw against Shawn McCalman and Aaron Nelson. However, he was still able to claim victories against both.

McCumby (28-1, 21 KO’s) may be 32 and a relative unknown to casual fans, but his last outing put him on the map. In September 2024, he shocked the boxing world by dropping former champion Caleb Plant in the fourth round and holding his own for much of the fight before being stopped in the ninth. He’ll be hoping to lean on his experience and go much better this time around against Pacheco.

Pacheco’s team knows McCumby is a very dangerous fighter, but surely they see something in this matchup that they’re extremely confident in, otherwise why else would they risk his undefeated professional record?

Last time out, Pacheco showed his weakness in the fact that he can’t really hang with people inside the pocket. With a reach of 79”, it’s clear that he wants to keep the fight long where he can double up on his jab and then fire a hard right hand to the head or body behind it. 

McCumby will be licking his lips at the thought of evading Pacheco’s jab, and then stepping in with hard hooks and uppercuts, similar to how he troubled former world champion Caleb Plant. McCumby’s aggression was his own downfall in that fight, and the same thing could happen again if he’s not careful.

The bookies have Pacheco as a huge favourite in this one, which is understandable considering his physical and age advantage. He’s also an undefeated prospect with genuine world champion ambitions, so he should quite rightly be winning this fight if he wants to live up to the hype.

McCumby hits hard and is very aggressive, plus he’s got good experience. Of course, we can’t forget the trouble he caused for Caleb Plant. But, we just saw Plant lose in a monumental shock a few weeks ago, so we no longer know how good Plant actually is now.

I am going to go with Diego Pacheco to win via decision or technical decision at odds of 3.40 (Sky Bet). I believe McCumby will be a threat for the first 4 rounds, but Pacheco will adapt and then control the fight with his footwork, jab and long arms on his way to a points victory.
