DAZN pulls Floyd Mayweather June fight after Tyson promoter injunction
DAZN has scrubbed Floyd Mayweather's June 27 exhibition against kickboxer Mike Zambidis from its schedule after the promotional company behind a proposed Mayweather-Mike Tyson bout filed an injunction to block the fight.
According to MMA Mania, promoter CSI claims Mayweather accepted a $4.65 million down payment and signed an agreement making Tyson his next opponent. The company is now moving to prevent any competing match from going forward. Ticketmaster has also stopped selling tickets to the Athens event.
Mayweather's mounting legal troubles
The injunction adds to a growing list of financial and legal issues for the former welterweight champion. Mayweather faces two felony charges in Nevada over bad checks he reportedly wrote for a $200,000 watch, per the report. He also filed lawsuits earlier this year against Showtime Sports and its head Stephen Espinoza for $340 million, and against former business manager Jona Rechnitz for an additional $175 million.
CSI appears willing to pursue anyone facilitating a fight that does not involve Tyson. DAZN's decision to pull the Zambidis match suggests the legal pressure is working.
The Zambidis bout was the latest in a string of low-stakes exhibitions Mayweather has taken since his 2017 retirement from professional boxing. A clash with Tyson would draw significantly more attention and revenue, though no date has been announced for that proposed matchup.
