Darren Barker announces 1,800-mile endurance challenge for mental health
Former IBF middleweight champion Darren Barker has announced a 1,800-mile endurance challenge spanning three countries and two open-water swims to raise awareness for men's mental health and suicide prevention.
The challenge, dubbed The Longest Round, will see Barker cycle from Edinburgh to Dover before swimming the English Channel, then ride from Calais to Gibraltar and swim the Strait of Gibraltar into Morocco. The multi-week expedition begins in August 2026, with proceeds supporting The Ricky Hatton Foundation and CALM, Matchroom Boxing reports.
Challenge inspired by final Ricky Hatton interview
Barker told the outlet the challenge stems from his final interview with Ricky Hatton last September, recorded five days before the former world champion's death. "As the last person to interview 'The Hitman', I feel there is now a message to carry — about silent struggle and breaking that silence," Barker said. "Strength isn't silence. Strength is speaking. Strength is asking for help."
The journey will include cycling legs across the UK, France and Spain, plus a 21-mile Channel swim and a nine-mile crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar. Eddie Hearn, Tony Bellew, Joe Calzaghe, Carl Frampton, John Terry and Luke Littler are among the figures expected to join Barker for portions of the route.
DAZN and Matchroom Boxing will document the challenge from training camp through completion. Donations will fund therapy programmes, crisis intervention and community outreach focused on suicide prevention.
