Danny Garcia Open To Fighting Jermall Charlo

Danny Garcia is willing to face Jermall Charlo later down the line following the latter’s win over Jose Benavidez Jr

Charlo made his long-awaited comeback against Benavidez Jr. after having been out of the ring for more than two years due to mental health struggles. However, the comeback had been far from pleasant. The boxer failed to make weight during the weigh-in for their contracted weight at 163 pounds. Instead, Charlo came in at 166.4 pounds. Thereafter, the boxer went away to try and get down to the weight. But in doing so, the American arrived back on the scales at a heavier weight of 164.6 pounds. The fight still went ahead, but it did not portray the American in a positive light despite his following comments.

Charlo’s Comeback

"Yeah. I’ve been training since I’ve been gone. So I’ve been training. But whenever you call camp ‘a camp’ like when camp really formed and became camp, it was like, yeah, a couple of weeks. I don’t need a whole bunch. What more can I learn besides sharpening up? For this fight, I’m OK being a little rough around the edges," Charlo said

However, Charlo did redeem himself with a comfortable unanimous-decision win over Benavidez. But in truth, he was fighting a 154-pounder who had moved up.

"I want to thank Al Haymon for understanding me. I know when you’re a man it’s hard to explain to somebody what you stand for, but I’m happy that I went through what I went through because I showed myself that anything can be done. And it is what it is.

“This division right here [is the most comfortable for me]. Whatever division I’m in, I’m going to conquer it. I’m going to do what I have to do. Bring me to the best place. I promise my fans are the people of boxing. To the people of boxing, I’ll be back. I’ll give you all more fights in 2024. I’m motivated by boos so keep booing. Shoutout to the Benavidez family,” Charlo stated

Garcia On Charlo

As for Garcia, the American has been out of the ring since his own fight against Jose Benavidez Jr. Garcia came away with a majority-decision win over a year ago in what was his first fight at junior middleweight. And given that the belts have been split up now that Jermell Charlo is no longer undisputed at 154 pounds, it may make sense for Garcia to chase fights at this weight class.

After all, if he were to face Jermall Charlo, it would have to be at 160 since he is the current WBC middleweight champion. And in any event, if Jermall struggled to make 163 pounds, getting him to boil down to 160 is unlikely to happen anytime soon. At the same time, expecting Garcia to go above his weight is unlikely since the highest he has fought at has been 154 pounds. Nevertheless, the boxer was open to the idea of fighting Jermall at some point.

“If it makes sense. If it makes sense. If I win the middleweight title and he’s middleweight champion, you never know, it can happen," Garcia
