Crawford Says Spence Is Next, Bud Hits Out At The IBF For Stripping Him

Terence Crawford has revealed that his Errol Spence Jr. rematch will be next and take place at 147 unless stated otherwise due to contractual obligations.

The ‘Truth’ activated the rematch clause after having been stopped in the ninth round in a one-sided fight. The victory made Crawford the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era and undisputed in a second weight class.

And following the decision of the IBF to strip him, the rematch has been up in the air. A weight class and a date are still yet to be agreed.

Meanwhile, Showtime’s exit from boxing at the end of the year has also complicated matters. But for Crawford, the focus was on the Spence rematch.

Crawford On The Spence Rematch

"We signed to do a rematch, and that’s what it is. I don’t have a date, but I know that’s the next fight for Terence Crawford. It’s up in the air due to the fact that Showtime has decided not to do boxing. Nothing has been noted to me that the fight would not happen. The contract says 147, and that’s where it will be right now. We can decide on 154 or 147. He wants to prove to the world that he can defeat me in a rematch. I take my hat off to him," Crawford said

Outside of the Spence fight, Crawford also had a few choice words to say about the IBF’s decision to strip him. The move came less than three months after Bud had won the title, as the organization elevated the then IBF interim champion Jaron Ennis to the status of a full champion.

This came after Crawford had failed to fight Ennis in line with the IBF’s rule that a champion must defend against a mandatory in their first title defense.

But given that Crawford was contractually bound to face Spence, the boxer had no way of getting around that. In response, the welterweight stated the following.

Crawford On The IBF’s Decision

"Man, f— the IBF! That’s what I say,. You know what I mean? F— the IBF and they organization. I don’t give a f— about, you know what I mean, the IBF. They stripped me damn near 2½ months after [I won] my title, not knowing what was gonna happen next. But it’s cool, though. I’m not mad at ‘em, you know? I got what I needed, and that was, you know, undisputed. And the rest is history. You know, I don’t care about none of that," Crawford stated

With that being said, there is a danger that the rematch does not happen moving forward. Crawford will be looking to stay active and continue the momentum from the Spence win.

Meanwhile, there is no guarantee that Spence will go through with the rematch as terms are still yet to be agreed. And if the rematch does break down, then Crawford’s next options are not that clear.

And at the age of 36, that is far from ideal. ‘Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com
