Conor McGregor tells arrested Dustin Poirier to take accountability

Conor McGregor says Dustin Poirier needs to own up to his recent arrest instead of deflecting blame.

The former two-division UFC champion addressed Poirier's Father's Day arrest for public intoxication at a Georgia airport during an appearance on Smash Cast, according to MMA Mania. McGregor, who has battled his own demons with alcohol and legal troubles, told Poirier to treat the incident seriously rather than laugh it off with enablers online.

"Karma is a mirror," McGregor said, per the outlet. "If I was to say something to him, I would say, take this with absolute seriousness. Do not engage in people. Oh, there's people, 'It was funny, I like him more.' So you start laughing about it. 'Ah, maybe it wasn't so bad. Maybe I'll keep going.' Then the next one's worse, and then you slip deeper and deeper."

McGregor revealed he had spoken with Megan Olivi about Poirier before the arrest footage went public, questioning why his retired rival had started using steroids when his physique showed little change. The Irishman said warning signs were already visible.

The pointed advice comes as McGregor himself pursues sobriety ahead of his UFC 329 return this weekend against Max Holloway. Despite their bitter trilogy history, McGregor kept his message direct. "He has to take accountability," he said. "I seen something, he came out, his father — he blamed his father. You have to take accountability, my man."

Poirier has since apologized for the incident and disclosed struggles with mental health following his retirement. McGregor faces Holloway on Saturday after five years away from competition.
