Claressa Shields returns to middleweight to face Kaye Scott

Claressa Shields will drop back down to middleweight to challenge unified WBC and WBA champion Kaye Scott on August 15 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Bad Left Hook reports. The fight streams live on DAZN.

Shields, 31 and unbeaten at 18-0, has not competed at 160 pounds since shutting out Maricela Cornejo over 10 rounds in 2023. She spent the past two years campaigning as a heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight, most recently beating Franchon Crews-Dezurn by decision in February. The weight-hopping reflects a consistent problem: Shields has cleared out every division she can make, leaving her to hunt down whatever title opportunities still exist.

Scott's unlikely path to unified champion

Scott brings a 5-1-1 record to the ring but holds legitimate hardware. The 42-year-old Australian turned pro at 39 after a solid amateur run and claimed the vacant WBC and WBA belts in December with a majority decision over Olivia Curry. That victory came in a rematch after the pair fought to a draw three months earlier. Scott lost her first world title shot to Desley Robinson in late 2024.

Shields acknowledged the limited options in the division. "At this point in my career, every fight is about legacy," she said in the fight announcement. "Kaye Scott is a champion, and I respect what she's accomplished. But becoming undisputed at 160 pounds again starts with beating the best." Scott, for her part, called the matchup "the biggest challenge" and said she is "prepared to step into that ring and prove that I am the best middleweight in the world."

The August card lands in a packed stretch for women's boxing. Cherneka Johnson defends the undisputed bantamweight title against Dina Thorslund on August 8 in Orlando, while Chantelle Cameron meets Mikaela Mayer in a three-belt welterweight unification on August 29 in Birmingham. Katie Taylor closes out the run with what is billed as her retirement fight against Flora Pili on September 5 in Dublin.
