Charlo Dismisses Weight Worries, John Fury Worried About Ngannou
Jermell Charlo has dismissed the difference in weight as he prepares to face Canelo Alvarez on September 30th, 2023.
Charlo will jump up two weight classes in order to face Alvarez, as the American aims to become undisputed in a second weight class.
Victory would put Charlo up there with Terence Crawford as being the only other person to have achieved this. However, the perception going into the fight is that Alvarez will be too big and heavy against Charlo.
But for all of the criticism coming his way, the American has downplayed any fears that he will be overwhelmed.
Charlo Dismisses Weight Worries
"I’m just naturally a big motherf——. Straight up. I’m not a little guy. The world of boxing only see me when I weigh in, when I’m fighting and sh!t.
"They don’t know my real size. Six feet. They don’t know I can fill out and beat a naturally bigger guy in that ring. Like I’m saying, just because I’m super welterweight when I fight, I go down to make that weight," Charlo
Charlo’s Reality
Nevertheless, it is an entirely different matter when it comes to facing Canelo. The latter is not a four-division champion for nothing, which is why a victory would propel Charlo’s career even further.
Not only that, but Canelo does have a lot to prove given that he is facing criticism over his recent performances. The failure to stop GGG and John Ryder has given the Mexican more motivation to prove his critics wrong. And there is not getting away from that.
John Fury Worried About Ngannou
Meanwhile, John Fury has spoken about his worry that Francis Ngannou could end up doing some damage to his son Tyson Fury.
The pair are getting ready for their crossover bout on October 28th, 2023, in which Ngannou will be making his boxing debut. Naturally, Fury is the favorite. After all, he is a seasoned boxer and the current WBC heavyweight champion.
However, John Fury’s worries suggest that Ngannou is an unpredictable figure who could do something out of the ordinary. Although there will be penalties in place incase Ngannou does end up resorting to MMA moves, in the heat of the moment, anything can happen.
"I do believe [Ngannou’s] going to bring the smoke. I’m expecting Tyson to come out with a broken leg or a broken arm. I’m glad they’re paying him well, because if they weren’t paying him well I wouldn’t put him up against Ngannou. He’s going to get knocked about, Tyson, and he knows that. Exhibition my backside – they’re going to kill each other them pair. “Go out with a bang. Let the world know who’s the real deal in all walks of life, not just a boxing match. "He’ll probably bite one of your ears off as well," John Fury
Implications
In reality, however, this will simply be an attempt to promote the fight. The ‘Gypsy King’ has been under heavy criticism for not facing Oleksandr Usyk, despite the latter agreeing to a 70-30 split for the undisputed heavyweight championship fight.
And at a time when the boxing community are asking to see the first undisputed champion since 1999, Fury knows the pressure is on him to deliver that fight.
Nevertheless, boxing has shown that some of the biggest fights do not end up happening. Carl Froch missed out on the chance to face Joe Calzaghe in what would have been a blockbuster of a fight.
Not only that, but fans were also deprived of the opportunity to see Floyd Mayweather face Paul Williams. After beating Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, Mayweather retired rather than facing Williams.
The latter then got paralysed following a motorbike accident, and the rest was history. And with the rise of MMA in general, boxing may end up falling behind if it fails to put on the biggest shows.
And at a time when there is more choice than ever, it is vital that boxing fans get value for money. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing and MMA by visiting boxingblitz right here.
