Carlos Ulberg's next fight clouded by injury after UFC 327 win

New heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg may not defend his belt anytime soon. The New Zealander knocked out Jiří Procházka in the opening frame at UFC 327 to claim the strap, but appeared to injure his leg during the bout, ESPN reports. The promotion's next move hinges on how serious the damage proves to be.

If Ulberg needs significant recovery time, an interim title scenario becomes likely, according to Brett Okamoto. The division has been plagued by similar disruptions — Procházka vacated in 2022, Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought to a draw later that year for the vacant belt, and Jamahal Hill relinquished the title in 2023. Now Ulberg's coronation arrives with a question mark attached.

Khalil Rountree Jr. emerges as top contender if Ulberg cleared

Should the champion's knee check out healthy, Rountree makes the most sense for a first defence despite his recent loss to Procházka in October, per Okamoto's analysis. "His performance was more inspiring than Ankalaev's was in a loss to Alex Pereira on the same card," Okamoto wrote. Rountree went toe-to-toe with Procházka before falling, while Ankalaev absorbed a one-sided beating from Pereira at the same event. Neither man presents an ideal challenger fresh off a defeat, but the division's shallow contender pool leaves few alternatives.

Elsewhere on the UFC 327 card, Paulo Costa impressed at heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight in his debut at the weight class, stopping Azamat Murzakanov. Okamoto floated a rebooked clash with middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev, who has made clear his intention to move up regardless of whether he retains his belt against Sean Strickland at UFC 328 in May. The two were scheduled to meet in 2023 before Costa withdrew with an infected elbow.

At featherweight, Aaron Pico rebounded from his debut loss to Lerone Murphy by scoring a violent finish. A potential matchup with Jean Silva would pit two 29-year-old finishers coming off statement wins. Tatiana Suarez remains on the outside of the strawweight title picture after Zhang Weili moved up to flyweight last year — the obvious next step is a third attempt at booking Virna Jandiroba, a fight that fell through twice in 2023 and 2024.

Ulberg's medical updates will determine whether the division crowns an interim champion or simply waits. The promotion has not announced a timeline for the assessment.
