In today’s boxing news latest headlines, Jose Benavidez Sr. has revealed that a fight between his son, David Benavidez, and Demetrius Andrade could be announced to the public next week.

According to reports, a fight will take place on November 24th, 2023, for the WBC interim super middleweight championship belt. Benavidez holds the belt after having gotten a win over Caleb Plant in his last fight.

The victory occurred via a unanimous decision as the ‘Mexican Monster’ put himself in a position to face Canelo Alvarez for all the belts at super middleweight.

Nevertheless, Alvarez chose to go into another direction. He will square off against Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023.

Benavidez-Andrade Form

Meanwhile, Andrade is a former two-weight world champion. He has had belts at junior middleweight and middleweight. Although that may be the case, a fight at 168 is a different kettle of fish.

Benavidez is already a much bigger fighter than the super middleweight limit, having spoken previously about wanting to move up to 175.

And yet, if there is anyone who can give Benavidez problems, then it is Andrade. The latter is also undefeated like the Mexican and his form has been impressive too.

His last fight was a win over Demond Nicholson at the beginning of the year. And with so much anticipation around the fight, this is what Benavidez Sr. had to say.

"Everything is done. It’s ready to go. Pretty soon, it’s going to be announced, maybe this week or next week when the date. I like Boo Boo. He’s a great fighter, a slick fighter, and undefeated for a reason. The fight is done. We signed before him. I’ve been trying to get this fight for a long time, and all because Canelo says he’s a terrible fighter, a horrible fighter. I don’t think he’s a horrible fighter. He’s a dangerous fighter. That’s why he didn’t want to fight him. I heard that the Charlos don’t want to fight him, and I heard that all these people don’t want to fight him. We want to fight him. We want to make that fight happen. We should do good numbers. Maybe the same [as Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant]," Benavidez Sr.

Benavidez’s Future

Ultimately, a win over Andrade will push the calls for the Canelo fight to happen. There is only so much that Benavidez can do before the fight dies down, though.

And with Mexican Independence Day available next year for a mega fight, a bout with Canelo would do massive numbers. But even if that fight does not happen, Andrade is still a big name.

Naturally, there will be comparisons over how Canelo does against Charlo, with how Benavidez does against Andrade. And given that there are concerns that Canelo is declining, there will be more scrutiny on both fighters. Either way, the intention is to see Benavidez make a statement.

"We’re willing to take that chance to show people that David is the best at 168, and we have to look impressive. We can’t just win that fight. We have to stop this guy or give him a beating in order to go to the next level and prove ourselves. We have to prove ourselves," Benavidez Sr.
