Benavidez Calls For Canelo To Be Stripped

In today’s boxing news, David Benavidez has called for Canelo Alvarez to be stripped of his WBC belt if he does not end up facing him.

The ‘Mexican Monster’ has been Alvarez’s mandatory for over a year, having had the WBC interim belt. The Mexican’s last fight was a win over Caleb Plant, which put him in line to face Alvarez.

As of now, Benavidez is preparing to Demetrius Andrade on November 25th, 2023. Both fighters remain undefeated, as one fighter will lose their undefeated record.

Benavidez is considered the favorite, given that he is a natural 168 pounder. Andrade’s success has come at 154 and 160, the two weight classes that he has managed to win titles at.

Although that may be the case, Benavidez also had one eye on the WBC title. And he has asked the authorities to intervene by taking action against Canelo for not facing him.

Benavidez On Canelo

"The past two years and I’ve been doing my job, I’ve been doing my thing. That’s what happens when you’re number one contender. You fight for the belt, so I think they [WBC] should do the right thing, and if he [Canelo Alvarez] doesn’t want to fight, strip him with a title, but like I said, I want to make my own lane.

"I don’t want to just be that fighter waiting for Canelo. As I’m doing now, I fought Caleb Plant, and now I’m fighting Demetrius. I want to make my own lane. I’m very excited," Benavidez said

Nevertheless, if Benavidez cannot secure a bout with Canelo, then a move up to 175 pounds could follow. The Mexican has previously spoken on his desire to move up to light heavyweight.

So much so that he recalled knocking out Dmitry Bivol during a sparring session. Although the latter did not confirm it, the fact that Benavidez is already big for 168, suggests that he does have more gears.

In addition, if that were the case, then a bout against Bivol or even Artur Beterbiev could follow later down the line. But as of now, the focus appears to be on Andrade. The following comments confirmed as much.

Benavidez On Andrade

“Demetrius Andrade is a slick fighter. He has a lot of tricks in his bag, but like I said, he’s going to bring the best out of me, and I’ve been working extremely hard for this camp like I do for all my camps. I’m ready to go in there. The last event [against Caleb Plant] was huge. So, I’m looking forward to having another massive pay-per-view event," Benavidez

Ultimately, Benavidez can continue to put up the wins in the hope that he gets his shot. But if a fight with Canelo does not end up happening, then Benavidez may well move up to 175.

And given that he has knockout power that can go up the weight classes, there is every chance of him securing a title shot moving forward. And there is no getting away from that. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingblitz.
