Former UFC heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith allegedly attempted to run over his wife with his vehicle multiple times following an altercation at a Nebraska bar, according to details released by the Sarpy County Attorney's Office.

Smith appeared before a judge Wednesday morning where his bond was set at $500,000, MMA Junkie reports. He was ordered to have no contact with his wife as a condition of release and was freed from Sarpy County Jail later that day.

What Prosecutors Allege Happened In Gretna

Prosecutors say Smith and his wife were involved in an incident at a bar in Gretna, Nebraska, on July 26. Smith reportedly threatened to kill his wife if she refused to get into his vehicle and return home with him. Authorities allege he then grabbed her and forced her into the car. During the drive, his wife exited the vehicle, at which point Smith allegedly threatened her again. After they arrived home and she stepped out a second time, Smith allegedly tried multiple times to strike her with the vehicle. She was able to avoid being hit and sustained no physical injuries during the alleged attempts, according to prosecutors.

The 38-year-old turned himself in Monday and was booked on three felony charges: attempted first-degree domestic assault, terroristic threats, and first-degree false imprisonment. The attempted assault charge carries a potential sentence of one to 50 years if convicted, while the other two charges can each bring up to three years.

Smith retired from MMA in April 2025 after three straight losses but later signed with Jorge Masvidal's Bare Knuckle MMA promotion as a heavyweight, where he submitted Chase Sherman in his debut. He has not publicly addressed the allegations and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
