Alexander Volkanovski targets August or September return
Alexander Volkanovski wants his next featherweight title defense locked in soon, ideally for August or September, with undefeated contender Movsar Evloev the probable opponent.
The champion told MMA Junkie he's waiting on the UFC's schedule to clear after major events like Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje this Sunday and Conor McGregor's return in July. "Obviously, I want something announced," Volkanovski said. "Not even announced, I want something definitely locked in as well, but you've got to understand that they've got a schedule that they need to keep with a lot of other champions."
Evloev the clear next challenger
Volkanovski expects to face Evloev barring any surprises. The Russian has gone 10-0 in the UFC despite injury setbacks, with wins over Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen, Lerone Murphy, and Diego Lopes. That last victory came in 2023, before Lopes twice challenged for the belt Volkanovski now holds.
"Movsar's obviously the most deserving, No. 1 contender," Volkanovski said, per MMA Junkie. "He's been the No. 1 contender for a while and everyone knows me as champion I want to fight the No. 1 guys, the guys that deserve it."
Volkanovski defended his featherweight strap in February at UFC 325, outpointing Lopes in Sydney to record the first defense of his second reign. UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Aug. 15 has no headliner yet and could be the landing spot.
