Navarrete And Valdez Hit 130-Pound Limit; Both Fighters Ready For War
The weigh-in took place for the Emanuel Navarrete vs. Oscar Valdez rematch, as both boxers made the 130-pound limit.
The fight takes place today as Navarrete defends his WBO Junior Lightweight Title. Navarrete enters the fight as the champion but on the back end of a loss. He made the decision to move up to 135 pounds in his last fight to face Denys Berinchyk. A win would have made him a four-weight world champion by picking up the vacant WBO Lightweight Title. But the loss meant his focus is back at 130. However, the Mexican has said he will consider other options at 135 moving forward. Valdez lost the first fight against Navarrete, meaning he has plenty to prove.
Navarrete overpowered Valdez by landing 1038 punches in the fight. Valdez’s only two defeats have come at the elite level, losing to Navarrete and the current WBC Lightweight Champion Shakur Stevenson. Valdez did recover from the Navarrete loss by beating Liam Wilson in his last fight. That win made him the WBO Interim Junior Lightweight Champion. Now, he has the chance to pick up the full belt. Navarrete weighted 129.9 pounds , while Valdez hit the scales at 130 pounds.
Mindset
“We know he trains in high altitude. This guy throws a high volume of punches, so we have to use our footwork to get away from those shots and counterpunch. We’ve been training very good as far as all those angles from those crazy looping uppercuts to the over right hands and those volume punches. We’re well prepared physically and mentally for this fight. He could take a shot. It doesn’t matter how many shots you hit him with — his face will always look clean. A little jab that touches my face, it bruises up pretty easily. I’ve always had delicate skin in the face,” Valdez said
“The first Navarrete vs. Valdez fight was incredible, and I have no doubt that Saturday’s rematch will elevate both men. These are two of Mexico’s great warriors, and both are determined to give the fans a sensational performance,” Bob Arum
