Nate Diaz Throws A Bottle At Islam Makhachev
Nate Diaz launched a water bottle at Islam Makhachev and his camp at the UFC 310 weigh-ins.
The card takes place today, as Alexandre Pantoja faces Kai Asakura in the main event. Islam and Diaz were present at the weigh-ins as an altercation happened. It is not clear what led to the following altercation, but Diaz did ruffle a few feathers. The following clip shows Diaz throwing a water bottle in the direction of Islam after Nate fired verbal shots. Diaz could be heard saying the following: “Pull up [man].”
Diaz Vs. Islam
Tagir Ulanbekov and Magomed Zaynukov were part of Islam’s team. Zaynukov reacted by throwing something back at Nate, which is when security intervened to diffuse the situation. Islam was present at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for the UFC 311 on-sale press conference, which took place before the ceremonial weigh-ins for UFC 310. Islam will defend his UFC Lightweight Title against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311.
Diaz may simply be laying the foundations for a future fight with Makhachev. Nate has not had a UFC fight since 2022 when he beat Tony Ferguson at UFC 279. However, he has become one of the most iconic fighters in the UFC’s history following his two fights with Conor McGregor. He beat McGregor during their first clash at UFC 196 before losing the rematch at UFC 202.
A trilogy has long been discussed. However, McGregor’s recent liability for a civil sexual assault lawsuit means that any talk of a trilogy is not going to happen. Nate is also coming off a majority decision win against Jorge Masvidal in a boxing fight. That avenged his loss to Masvidal at UFC 244 in 2019, when Jorge became the BMF Champion. Nate’s team has said previously that he would like to return to the UFC.
Diaz’s UFC Return
“But me in my position, I think that would be great. I think a trilogy probably makes a lot of sense for both of those guys. Chandler and McGregor is a good fight too. But I mean, just the history of Nate and McGregor, I think it would be the bigger fan fight if they had a trilogy. In my opinion, that’s what I’m thinking,” Cesar Gracie (who trained Diaz)
However, there is no clear pathway for him to return. This raises question marks over who he would face. Taking on a Makachev would be one of the biggest fights out there, simply from a commercial point of view. However, the chances of Nate even getting that are very unlikely since the 38 year old is at the end of his career.
He is also no longer seen as one of the top names in the lightweight division. Diaz has shown that he has a history of throwing water bottles. He did this during the build up for his McGregor fight, where the pair threw cans and bottles at their UFC 202 press conference. And Nate’s reaction to Islam has drawn a strong reaction from MMA fans.
