Jaime Munguia knocked out Erik Bazinyan in the tenth round to bounce back from his defeat to Canelo Alvarez

This was Munguia’s first fight with Top Rank, having left Golden Boy Promotions following the Canelo defeat. In the opening round, both men were looking to use their jab. Bazinyan connected with a solid right hand, only for Munguia to respond with a counter left. Munguia was attempting to close the distance and attack the body, while Bazinyan was doing his best to pick Munguia off with his jab.

Munguia Presses The Action

Munguia continued to apply the pressure, finding success in rounds four and five. However, Bazinyan was connecting with the cleaner punches. His jab repeatedly caught the Mexican. Munguia switched things up in the sixth round, connecting with solid combinations to the body. The momentum had now shifted.

Munguia buzzed Bazinyan with numerous combinations and a big right hand in the seventh. While Bazinyan managed to recover and land some counters, he had slowed down considerably. Heading into the tenth round, Munguia was looking for the finish.

Munguia’s Stoppage

A left hook to the hurt Bazinyan, followed by a left-right combination to send him to the canvas. Despite Bazinyan trying to get up, he failed to beat the count. It was the perfect start to Munguia’s Top Rank career, justifying his decision to leave Golden Boy Promotions. In his post-fight comments, Munguia said he wanted to face Caleb Plant or Edgar Berlanga next.

“[Bazinyan] hits hard, but at no point did he hurt me. It was a fight where I had to be intelligent. We had to break him down with shots to the body and then we came out with everything and that’s how we got the knockout. Next Year I would like to face Caleb Plant or Edgar Berlanga,” Munguia

“It was going very great. I was feeling very comfortable. All of a sudden, I got caught. I don’t know what happened. I promise I will be back stronger,” Bazinyan
