Munguia Knocks Out Ryder In The Ninth

Jaime Munguia dropped John Ryder four times before stopping the Brit in the ninth round.
The Mexican started the fight dominantly, dropping Ryder in just the second round. As Ryder sought to bully Munguia, the Mexican responded with a right hand to send Ryder to the canvas. With only a minute gone in the round, Munguia went for the finish, but Ryder held on to the bell.
Munguia Starts Fast
It was the same story in the third, as Munguia pinned Ryder on the ropes before dropping him again in the next round. A one-two on the counter sent Ryder, who was now heavily behind on the scorecards, to the floor.
Ryder Responds
Ryder knew he had to change tactics, with a knockout being the only way of winning. The Brit had a better sixth round, landing some counters from Munguia’s jab, which fell short, as he recovered from the earlier knockdowns. That was a momentary period of success as Munguia stepped on the gas again.
Munguia Ends It
Munguia almost got the stoppage in the eighth, as his combinations had the referee Wes Melton monitoring the situation. The inevitable happened in the ninth, with Ryder getting dropped twice, as his corner threw in the towel. After the fight, Munguia called out Canelo Alvarez, and De La Hoya was keen on making that fight.

Post-Fight Comments
“I worked really hard for this. I know a lot of people didn’t believe in me, but this is the result of hard work. We’re ready for 168. Last time [against Sergiy Derevyanchenko], I was throwing punches like crazy, but this time my timing was perfect. Ryder was a great fighter, but we’re ready to keep on going.
“I feel very happy because I worked hard for this. I know that a lot of people didn’t trust me and that’s why I worked harder to prove them wrong. [And] I know that I have to work on my timing in the ring. Last time I threw a lot of punches but I wanted to control my output more in this fight. The truth is that it will be a great fight among Mexicans, and if Canelo wants the fight it would be an honor to share the ring with him,” Munguia
“I talked to Freddie Roach right after the fight in the ring and he looked at me and smiled. And he said, ‘This is just the beginning. You wait and see.’ So, I’m excited for Jaime’s future. I’m excited that he made a statement. Along these lines, he added there was now a possibility of Munguia facing Canelo in the ring. “That’s the fight to make. September is the fight to make with Canelo Alvarez. And all of you can hopefully push that. That’s the fight in all Mexican showdown. Imagine that,” De La Hoya stated
