Munguia Avenges His Surace Loss – ‘I Am Here To Stay’

Jaime Munguia avenged his defeat against Bruno Surace with a unanimous decision win in their super middleweight clash.
Munguia lost the first fight via a stoppage in the second loss of his career. Munguia teamed up with Canelo Alvarez for this fight as he sought to rebuild his name after signing with Top Rank. However, it was not the best of starts for Munguia. Surace caught him in the opener with a big right hand, a shot which had stopped him in their first bout. However, Munguia shrugged it off as he continued to press the action in the second.
Surace remained composed and waited patiently, landing a big right hook to buzz Munguia in the third. Munguia continued to walk forward in the middle rounds, landing a sharp combination in round six.
Munguia’s pressure paid off in the second half of the fight. A left hook hurt Surace in the ninth. However, Surace returned fire with his right hook near the end of the round.
Surace had to secure a stoppage, but Munguia was looking to do the same in the final round. Neither fighter secured a stoppage, as Munguia won the decision. The CompuBox numbers showed Munguia landed 105 punches from 367, while Surace connected with 64 from 292. Munguia also had more power punches, with 77, compared to Surace’s 35. Surace shaded the jab stats with 29, while Munguia landed 28. It was the perfect response from Munguia, who can now look to the future.
Munguia Reacts
“It was really important for me to come back from that [defeat]. More than anything we were working on our mentality, and that’s what you need to do after a fight like this. What we saw tonight is that I got the victory and Jaime Munguia is here to stay,” Munguia said
“I think it was a great fight, we had a really good opponent in front of us. It was really important for me to come back from (the loss to Surace). I got the victory, and I’m here to stay. (Reynoso) was a great change that I made. We’re going to continue to grow and gel as a team, working together to do even better things. I think more than anything it was just about this fight, being calm and understanding the distance. Surace was looking for me to make a mistake, and I’m really happy and grateful to Eddy Reynoso,” Munguia added
