Mosley Rips Boxers For Chasing Money – ‘We Fought For The Fans’

Shane Mosley has said fighters are no longer boxing for the fans, citing money as their primary motivation.
The recent Times Square card in May divided the boxing community based on the poor showings from fighters. Devin Haney’s fight with Jose Ramirez was the fifth-lowest in terms of punch output on CompuBox, with 499. Ryan Garcia’s bout with Rolando Romero was not any better, with just 490 punches. To top it off, Canelo Alvarez’s Undisputed Super Middleweight Title fight against William Scull was the lowest ever recorded on CompuBox at just 445 punches. Oscar De La Hoya felt fighters were no longer interested in entertaining fans, as Mosely had a similar view.
“I think they’re getting paid too much money, and they’re not putting in the work. They’re not fighting for the fans. We fought for the fans. We fought for honor and to be the best, and we wanted to prove to prove stuff,” Mosley said

The Saudis have said they only want boxers who are willing to fight and not run on their cards moving forward. That will root out any poor showings since the Saudis have the ability to provide the biggest purses, giving fighters an incentive to put in the work. The directive also means that the best will face each other, knowing that their brand will suffer if they do not perform. Devin Haney had been hoping for a Ryan Garcia rematch. However, Haney’s poor showing, while Ryan’s loss disrupted those plans. Bob Arum has said fighters were compensated by their ability to entertain, which has now been harmed by the huge guaranteed purses.
“It [Inoue] was a brilliant performance and thank God it was a great fight within a great show and boxing needed that having swallowed and paid money for Friday night’s show from New York and Saturday’s show from Riyadh. This was really what boxing’s about. The other stuff, it defies what it’s about but it’s certainly not entertaining — it’s agonizing,” Arum said
