In the latest boxing news, David Morrell Jr. will reportedly defend his WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight title against Sena Agbeko on December 16th, 2023.

The fight was initially set to go head on the Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia card only for it to be called off. The Nevada State Athletic Commission discovered an abnormality in the brain, which was enough for them not to sanction the fight.

As such, Agbeko was not declared medically fit for the fight as Yamaguchi Falcao stepped in. Morrell Jr. would come through that bout with ease after stopping Falcao in the first round to remain undefeated.

Since then, Agbeko’s promoter (Dmitriy Salita) has gotten approval from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, as the fighter was cleared to box after getting the all clear from a neurologist.

So this time, however, Agbeko may pose more of a problem. Agbeko managed to beat Isaiah Steen in what was an upset at the time, which is why the Cuban will have to remain on guard.

And yet, Steen was unable to keep that momentum as the boxer was stopped by Lester Martinez in his last fight. A win for Morrell Jr. will increase the calls for a fight with David Benavidez. The latter has already make it clear that he is willing to face the Cuban if a fight with Canelo Alvarez fails to get made.

Benavidez On Morrell Jr.

“I was going after Caleb Plant. I got him. Demetrius Andrade, I’ve had my eye on him for a while, and I got him. After I get him, if I don’t get the Canelo fight, then we’re going after David Morrell. “I’ve been preparing for this since I was 23 years old. I’ve been a professional for ten years. I’m more than ready. I’m not just preparing for Canelo. I want to be the most dominant fighter in my generation,” Benavidez said

Despite this being the case, a fight between the pair had failed. Prior to Benavidez agreeing to fight Demetrius Andrade on November 25th, 2023, there were discussions between the two sides.

However, an agreement could not get made with Morrell’s side being very vocal about how they were not sure as to the reasons for the breakdown in talks. And that ultimately left the fanbase feeling none the wiser.

“David Morrell is on everyone’s lips and we believed that the fight against Benavidez was possible, but then they went with Demetrius Andrade. I do not know what happened. The boxer got cold feet. Benavidez’s father attacked us; he called us cowards. Then I met with him. We shook hands and said the fight was going to happen. Everything was ready. I do not know what happened. Morrell is the Bogeyman of the division. Nobody wants to fight with him, but something big is going to happen, because he is one of the best, if not at the end of the year it will be at the beginning of next,” Luis DeCubas Sr. (Warriors Boxing)
