Mikey Garcia Will Not Box Mayweather – Says Robert Garcia

In some top boxing news, Mikey Garcia has denied reports that he is on course to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition on December 9th, 2023.

That is according to Robert Garcia. Reports indicated that Mayweather was seeking another run out on Showtime in what would be the network’s final fight after their decision to exit boxing at the end of the year.

And given that Garcia is a four-weight world champion, whose last fight was in 2021 against Sandor Martin which ended in defeat, the Mexican was being touted as the name on everyone’s lips.

Despite Garcia sparring to start in shape, the boxer’s uncle, Robert Garcia, has downplayed any suggestions that it will happen.

“I said, ‘Mikey, are you serious about this?’ When the rumors about him and Mayweather, right away, I screenshotted it, and I sent it to Mikey, and I said, ‘Mikey, is that true?’ and Mikey said, ‘Nope, there’s no chance at all. I’m just doing it to stay in shape and not gain too much weight.’ So, that’s where we’re at right now.  If something changes. I’m pretty sure we’ll be the first ones to know. Mikey isn’t going to try to do something without us knowing, but as of right now, it’s definitely a no. Maybe if it changes, I’m pretty sure Mikey will let us know, but right now, Mikey says there’s no chance at all,” Garcia

If Garcia is out of the picture, then a non-boxer could be in the frame to face Mayweather. The bouts with John Gotti III and Aaron Chalmers had shown that.

But in any event, the anticipation to see Mayweather fight another non-boxer may not be there, especially since Devin Haney will face Regis Prograis on December 9th, 2023. And since that is a word title fight, Mayweather would have some serious competition on that date.

Outside of that possibility, Garcia gave his take on the upcoming fight between David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade. If the Mayweather bout does not go ahead, then the Benavidez bout would be Showtime’s last card.

It will place two undefeated fighters against each other, with the winner being the WBC interim champion at 168. And in doing so, put them in line to face Canelo Alvarez.

The narrative heading into the fight is that Benavidez will prove to be too strong and powerful for Benavidez. And yet, when it came to the actual bout, Garcia did acknowledge that Andrade would pose some problems due to his awkward style. But in any event, Garcia picked the Mexican Monster.

“People outside of boxing don’t know much about [Demetrius] ‘Boo Boo’ [Andrade] because he hasn’t fought too much. He was fighting a few years ago on DAZN, and not too many people were paying attention, but he’s talented. I remember him fighting on a few Top Rank cards where I know he could fight. I’ve been a fan of his. Maybe he has a style that doesn’t catch the attention because he’s not a killer. He boxes really well. It’s not going to be easy for Benavidez. I think Benavidez is just too big for him, and eventually, he’ll start breaking him down. I pick Benavidez, but it’s a very challenging fight for Benavidez too,” Garcia
