Mike Tyson Backs Ali Act Changes – Is It The Right Move?

Mike Tyson has ruffled a few feathers after supporting the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act.
The act aims to make ‘changes’ to the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act (“Ali Act”), with the new bill being backed by Dana White and TKO. The new legislation wants to implement Unified Boxing Organizations instead of the traditional four-major-sanctioning bodies of the WBC, WBO, IBF, WBA. This would allow a centralized body to control rankings, titles, much like the UFC.
The bill has suggested a national minimum payment (set at $150 per round) and national minimum of $25,000 for health coverage, which would cover in-fight injuries. Those who oppose the bill claim that this will erode fighter power, resulting in a smaller paydays. It also means fighters may be tied to less favorable contracts, unlike the big boxing stars who fight on a free-agency basis. Tyson is a friend of Dana White, as he backed the new bill.

“Muhammad Ali has always been my hero, both inside and outside the ring. Supporting these revisions honors the spirit of the original Ali Act by closing loopholes that have allowed some promoters to regain monopolistic control over fighters’ careers. This new legislation restores balance – allowing boxers to choose their own path while preserving the integrity of the sport. The Act does not alter the opportunities of those who are comfortable with the current system; it simply adds options for fighters who wish to pursue a different path that better suits their career goals.
“The proposed reforms provide meaningful benefits for fighters. Establishing a per-round minimum ensures that every athlete who steps into the ring receives fair compensation for the risks they take with their body and mind. The requirement for mandatory health insurance is equally critical – no fighter should ever have to choose between paying medical bills and pursuing their career. I’ve seen too many of my peers face that impossible decision,” Mike Tyson
