Mikaela Mayer Beats Sandy Ryan To Become The WBO Welterweight Champion
Mikaela Mayer defeated Sandy Ryan to become the WBO Welterweight Champion via a unanimous decision: 95-95, 96-94 and 97-93.
The fight was dominated by the bad build-up during which Ryan was hit with paint while she left her hotel. Ryan was unhappy, claiming that Mayer was responsible for this. The claim was based on Mayer’s comments about her ex-trainer Kay Koroma leaving to work with Ryan. But the fight went ahead as planned, with Mayer coming out on top.
The pair traded jabs during the first two rounds, with neither fighter taking a back step. Mayer connected with a big right hand that shook Ryan, who responded with some rights and hooks of her own. Ryan was attacking the body with her left hooks, while Mayer tried to counter on the inside in the fourth.
Mayer’s reach advantage was paying off, as she edged ahead in round five. But Ryan was still in the fight, landing consistent shots to the body in round six. The two exchanged to the end as they headed into the last round. They both landed right hands on the inside, getting praise from the crowd at the end.
Highlights
Post-Fight
“Before coming to the venue, I had a hit and run [with paint outside the hotel]. And that was definitely set up. I’m not taking nothing away from the win, but it unsettled me. “Walking to the venue, I was shook up. And then it threw me off a bit of my game plan because I just wanted to fight. And you saw at the start of the fight, I was handling her quite well on the jab. I was boxing her and then I started to pick it up.
“But then, I was obviously pushing it too hard. Still trying to come to terms with what happened last night. I know I shouldn’t have fought after I was attacked leaving my hotel room but I couldn’t let them win like that. I was fighting off empty and still felt I won the fight. We have obtained the CCTV and are in contact with the NYPD. Pretty obvious what happened and the truth will be set free shortly. You tried to ruin my career but trust me, it’s only just begun,” Ryan
Mayer’s Response
“I was just as surprised as everyone else. I was still upstairs, waiting for the call that my car was there. [And] I heard that paint had been thrown on Sandy. I had no idea. I was shocked. [And] I thought it was horrible. I would never go that far.
“Then I heard that she thought it had something to do with me and my team, which is disappointing. Obviously Sandy is my rival and my opponent, but I would never go that far. I heard after the fight that they were almost going to call it off and back out. That hits me hard. I’m so glad they didn’t. I’m really sorry that happened to her, especially being a guest in my country. It’s unacceptable,” Mayer
